General information only
Everything on this site is general information for homeowners. It isn't engineering, legal, financial, insurance or medical advice, and reading it doesn't make you our client. We can't diagnose your house from a web page, because soil, construction and water behave differently on every lot.
Safety first
If you think part of your home could collapse, or you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas company. Don't wait for an inspection or rely on anything you read here. Some repairs need a licensed structural engineer, a permit or both, so check with your local building department.
Prices and calculators
Our price ranges and calculator results are typical ranges for planning, not quotes or offers. Your exact price depends on what we find at the inspection. A binding price only comes from a written estimate after an in-person inspection.
Do-it-yourself tips
Some guides describe checks or small fixes you can do yourself. You're responsible for deciding whether a task is safe for you. Crawl spaces and basements can hold mold, sewage, electrical hazards and tight spaces, so stop and call a professional if you're unsure.
Accuracy and links
We work to keep our pages correct and show when each one was last updated, but codes, costs and products change, and we can make mistakes. Our editorial policy explains how to report an error. We don't control outside sites we link to, and a link isn't an endorsement.
Ads
Ads on our guides come from third parties. We don't review or endorse what they offer. See our advertising disclosure.
